Biggleswade Town 2 Thatcham Town 1

Saturday 13th April 2013
Captain Steve Gentle scored an 89th-minute winner to earn fourth-placed Biggleswade Town three valuable points in their bid to secure a place in the end-of-season playoffs. It started well for the Waders when they took an early lead in the 12th minute through Paul Barnes. Defender Rob Why, however, stunned the home fans by scoring Thatcham’s equaliser 13 minutes later and during the second half it looked as if Biggleswade would pay for missing a series of decent chances. Then, dramatically, Gentle headed home the winner with time running out to send the Waders fans home happy and relieved. The Carlsberg Stadium is a relatively new venue opened in 2008 to replace Town’s old ground that was situated on the northern outskirts of the town.

Cray Valley (PM), nearing the end of their second season in the Kent League, stunned visitors Beckenham Town with two very late goals to salvage an unlikely point. The visitors looked set to take home all three points with a first-half own goal netted by Sam Gent and a super strike from Alfie Nunn. Then with time running out, Luke Tanner pulled a goal back for Cray in the 90th minute before Gent made amends for his earlier own goal with a dramatic equaliser deep into stoppage time. The Middle Park Avenue ground has been significant upgraded over the past couple of years with two new stands erected and floodlights installed.

Saturday 20th April 2013
Other things over the weekend meant I could only make the opening Saturday game on the inaugural five-game Notts Senior League Bonanza. Selston FC did a superb job in hosting a bumper crowd of 358 and were also rewarded on the field with a point secured with the last kick of the game from Tim Moore. On a warm and sunny morning, they took an early lead through Richard Barnes but visitors Wollaton bounced back with second-half to move into what appeared a match-winning lead. While the masses moved to nearby Underwood, I returned home to take part in the Support Stafford Hospital march before the second part of today’s football ‘double’.

Gary Fife scored all four of Brocton’s goals as the Badgers completed their home league fixtures with a narrow 4-3 victory over Coventry Copsewood. The second leg of today’s football ‘double’ followed a drive back from the morning game at Selston FC and part of the Save Stafford Hospital march, which started at 2 pm. In warm sunshine, Copsewood took the lead against the run of play and held it until just after half-time when Fife equalised. Danny Fraser regained the lead for Copsewood before Fife added three more unanswered goals to put Brocton in a winning position. A late goal from Matt Fowler gave the visitors hope but Brocton held on and remain fourth in the Premier Division table.

Wolverhampton Casuals 2 Shawbury United 1

Tuesday 23rd April 2013
A six-pointer tonight in the race to finish third in the Premier Division table and Casuals moved back into the top three with come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Shawbury United. In what was an entertaining end-to-end encounter, Robbie Millington put Shawbury in front midway through the first half. The visitors held the lead for just 11 minutes until Matt Bailey hammered home an equaliser for Casuals. Bailey scored what proved to be the winner four minutes after the restart and Shawbury finished with ten men after Paul McMullins picked up a second booking in stoppage time. The win extended Casuals’ current unbeaten run to 15 league games.

Even though they feint hopes of lifting the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division title have ended during the past week, Wolverhampton Casuals still have plenty to play for during the closing weeks of the season. With five games to go including tonight’s fixture, they were very much in contention for a top three finish and also had a 14-match unbeaten run to extend as well as a JW Hunt Cup Quarter Final against Heath Hayes to look forward to. Standing in the way of Cassies this evening were Shawbury United, the side currently in third position, two points better off with a game in hand.

For those of you unfamiliar with Wolverhampton Casuals, they are based on Brinsford Lane in Coven Heath, to the north of Wolverhampton off the southbound A449 between the Three Hammers Golf Complex and M54. The ground has a small stand containing fourth rows of benches. Founded in 1899, the club began as Wolverhampton Old Church FC and was first remained Wolverhampton Amateurs in 1914 and then Staffordshire Casuals in 1946 following a short-lived post-War merger with Old Wulfs FC. A further change of name to Wolverhampton Casuals came in 1981 when the club joined the West Midlands League where they have remained for over 30 years. Last season, they finished in third position with 85 points.

Programmes were on sale at the pay box just inside the entrance and, as always on my visits to Brinsford Lane, I was thankful to the club official in the hospitality room for letting me copy down the line-ups. They were also announced as the teams entered the pitch; announcements of goal scorers and substitutions continued during the game as well. Julie’s Cassies Café was a good place to head before kick-off and at half-time. As I mentioned to the man on the gate, one of the two programmes I purchased will be heading 'down under' to New South Wales in a couple of weeks time.

The programme editorial explained some significant facts about tonight’s game between fourth-placed Casuals (84 points from 37 games) and third-placed Shawbury (86 points from 36 games). By winning all of their remaining games, Casuals could reach 99 points and Shawbury 104 points. Casuals won the game at Shawbury earlier in the season 4-3 with an injury-time winning goal. Recently Shawbury visited Brinsford Lane and left with a crushing 7-0 victory over Darlaston Town.

The last sentence of the editorial whetted my appetite for the game, if it wasn’t already: ‘Spectators should enjoy quality football in a top of the table clash between two very strong sides.’

Casuals (in familiar green and white) got the game underway attacking the far end (A449 end) in the first half. While play was end-to-end, chances were scarce until Shawbury took the lead in the 21st minute. Lee Constantine got into the area down the left and pulled the ball back for Robbie Millington to fire home a low angled shot into the bottom left corner past the wrong-footed Stephen Taylor.

After captain Craig Love was replaced by Tom Maydew, Casuals got back on level terms in the 32nd minute. From a narrow angle on the right, Sean Williams hit a near-post shot which Shawbury goalkeeper Nick Ashley could only parry. The loose ball fell to Matt Bailey who hammered home the equaliser from a few yards out.

From a position where they needed to raise their game, Casuals were now in the ascendency though they needed a save from Taylor just before the break to keep the score at 1-1. The Casuals goalkeeper dived to his left to keep out a near-post shot from Millington.

Looking at Twitter during half-time, I spotted that second-placed AFC Wulfrunians (94 points from 38 games at the start of the evening) were losing 2-0 at Wednesfield. Leaders Lye Town (99 points from 39 games) don’t play again until Saturday when they visit Wolverhampton Sporting Community.

The second half couldn’t have started any better for Casuals as they took the lead in the 49th minute with what proved to be the decisive winning goal. Ray Facey played the ball low down the middle into the path of Mark Bellingham who appeared to be tripped. Before the referee had time to make a decision, the ball had run free to Bailey who slotted it into the bottom-left corner of the net.

Soon, Casuals threatened again as poor defending gifted a chance to Maydew who drove over the bar.

Shawbury thought they’d equalised in the 64th minute when Lester Alderson forced the ball over the line from Millington’s corner. But the referee spotted a handball and awarded a free-kick instead. The visitors continued to look for a second gaol and Casuals needed a last-ditch clearance by George Williams to keep out a goalbound shot from Harry Murphy.

Like Shawbury, Casuals also had a goal disallowed and the [correct] decision denied Bailey a hat-trick. Bekir Halil, Wearing the captain’s armband following the earlier departure of Love, fed Facey on the left who crossed low for Bailey to sidefoot home, albeit from an offside position.

Ashley produced a diving save in the 89th minute to turn a well-struck shot from substitute Chris Henry round the left-hand post.

After keeping his cards hidden for the first 75 minutes of the largely good-natured contest, Mr Price then produced four yellows in 15 minutes, two in the direction of Shawbury’s Paul McMullins who headed for the changing rooms a few minutes before the rest of the players.

Casuals cleverly wound down the clock in the closing stages to record their 27th league win of the season. I must be a lucky omen as my own run of recent Casuals games extended to seven without defeat with the last five being victories!

All the goals came during the opening 32 minutes after Loughborough University recorded their third victory of the season over Rocester. Sam Cook headed the students into the lead in the 11th minute and Ebby Nelson-Addy added a second goal 14 minutes later. Rocester, playing their 11 game in 25 days, struggled during the first half and the Midland Alliance’s leading scorer Daniel Nti scored the third goals just after the half-hour mark. Rocester fought back after the interval with a much-improved performance and deserved a goal which proved elusive. The Romans, suffering their fourth straight defeat, remain in 13th position in the Midland Alliance table while Loughborough move up one position to fourth.

Barnt Green Spartak must now be odds-on favourite to become Champions of the Athium Midland Combination Division Two following a narrow 1-0 victory over Sutton United. They moved over Sutton into second position in the table and closed the gap with leaders Perrywood to just a point with three games in hand. In a tight contest from start to finish, the winner came just before half-time from a header by Chris Hanson. Sutton had a great chance to equalise during the second half from the penalty spot but Jared McGivern fired over the bar. Sutton’s ground on Hollyfield Road is fully railed off with no spectator covered standing or seats, as well as having an impressive smart clubhouse.

Tuesday 30th April 2013
In the penultimate home league game of the season at Evans Park, a hat-trick from Liam Holt played a big part in Lichfield City recording an impressive 5-2 victory over Stafford Town in this Staffordshire derby. The visitors were quick off the mark with two goals in 95 seconds during the opening eight minutes from Jon Huckfield and Josh Houghton. Not to be outdone, Paul McMahon soon pulled a goal back for the Reds before Holt scored either side of the interval to put City 4-1 up. McMahon converted a penalty to score his second goal midway through the second half but Holt completed a hat-trick directly from a free-kick.

Weather: mild and dry, chillier during the second half

Nobody knows for certain how many points clubs in the Athium Midland Combination Premier Division need to qualify for 2013/14 FA Cup. So, tonight, three points could be useful to both sides in their bid to play in the ‘oldest cup competition’ next season and also end the current campaign in the top ten.

Going into this derby, Stafford (51 points from 31 games) stood in seventh position with Lichfield (47 points from 31 games) three positions below. Both have two games to play after tonight: Stafford at home to Littleton and away to Racing Club Warwick, Lichfield both away and home to Bolehall Swifts (which is an unusual way to finish the season).

Stafford Town (in all red) got the game underway attacking the cricket ground in the first half, which tonight could also have been described as the rugby training end as well. With just 32 seconds on the clock, Alex Rowland tried his luck from fully 30 yards out and fired straight at Lichfield goalkeeper Craig Johnson.

The game quickly came to life with no fewer than three goals in a 132-second spell before the ninth minute.

Lichfield took the lead in the 6th minute. A cross from the left wasn’t cleared and defender Jon Huckfield, up in the Stafford area for a corner, volleyed wide of the diving Richard Stone into the bottom-right corner of the net.

The visitors doubled their lead within two minutes. Kyle Minto, on the left pulled the ball back for Josh Houghton to fire low into the same corner as Huckfield did, again out of reach of the diving Stone.

Stafford were stunned but pulled a goal back less than a minute after Houghton struck. Leading scorer Paul McMahon was allowed to run to the edge of the City area and lifted the ball past the advancing Johnson into an unguarded net.

What a start! 1-2 in the 9th minute.

After Ryan Fox and Francis Dacres both went close to an equaliser for Stafford, Huckfield could have scored another for Lichfield. Found unmarked at the far post by Ollie Rudd’s deep left-wing corner, the defender blasted a first-time shot wide of the target.

With the lights on, chances continued to be created and just after the half-hour, Rowland sent a 30-yard left-foot shot flashing just wide of the left-hand post.

Someone sat behind me the stand shouted “that’s a goal” as a 29 yard free-kick from Liam Holt flew just over the bar.

Holt, however, was on target in the 40th minute to score Lichfield’s third goal. Minto got down the right to the bye-line and pulled the ball back for Holt to hammer a right-foot shot into the bottom-right corner from around 10 yards out.

To the shout of “C’mon Town, let’s want it, all of us”, Lichfield got the second half underway and further extended their lead in the 56th minute. A free-kick delivered by Dan Worrall from near the left corner was headed on by Ryan Baker to the far post where Holt headed home his second goal of the game.

Needing to quickly get back into the game Town threw on Steve Bennett and James Cresswell in place of Rowland and the injured Fox. And, they were reduced the deficit in the 65th minute. Will Evans brought down Darryll Johns inside the area to, in my opinion, deny a goalscoring opportunity but wasn’t even booked by the referee. Mr Stonier decided a penalty was sufficient punishment which McMahon hammered home off the hands of the diving Johnson. Now 2-4 with around 25 minutes to play.

It wasn’t to be the start of a famous comeback as Holt completed a hat-trick in the 72nd minute to score Lichfield’s fifth goal. Out on the left, he tried his luck with a long-range free-kick which looped over Stone and dropped into the far side of the net.

Late in the game, McMahon almost completed his hat-trick. Cresswell played the ball down the right into the path of Stafford’s leading scorer who sent a first-time volley just wide of the far post.

I didn’t know that Stone Dominoes were playing their final game of the season tonight until Facebook friend Paul Proctor asked some for some advice. He and Callum travelled up from Hampshire so it was rude not for me to join them. Rooted to the bottom of the table and probably quitting Saturday football altogether, goals from Dwayne Spence and Derrick Agbor gave Stone two-goal lead during the first half and Jake Ratcliffe saved a penalty as well. It all went wrong, however, after the break after defender Alex Hutchinson received a straight red. Bacup scored twice in a minute to level things before Adrian Bellamy scored their late winner. Spare a thought for both clubs… the sad plight of the Doms, who finish the season with 13 points from 42 games, goal difference –135, and Bacup, required to play seven games in ten days to complete their fixtures.

This was a significant game for a number of reasons. Rocester completed their busy end-of-season schedule of 14 games in 32 days and manager Dave Langston took change for the last time. Visitors Ellesmere Rangers needed a win to extend their fight to avoid finishing bottom and did just with a very late winner. Trailing 2-0 after 11 minutes to goals from Joe Rogers and Edwin Ahenkorah, Ellesmere pulled a goal back before the interval through Tom Kelly. An own goal from Rocester’s Ryan Pirrie got the visitors back on level terms and Josh Brown scored a late winner to give Ellesmere what could turn out to be a priceless victory.

Stafford Town wrapped up their home league programme with a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of Premier Division runners-up Littleton. The winner came for the visitors as early as the fourth minute when Joe Lolley fired a loose ball home from 10 yards out. Injury- and suspension-hit Town have now lost their last three games and it looked as if they will need to win at Racing Club Warwick to finish their first Premier Division season in the top ten. Littleton, also enjoying their first Premier Division campaign, complete their fixtures in two days time away at champions Walsall Wood.

This was just about the perfect way of ending my 2012/13 English non-league season with a stress-free game on the hottest day of the year so far. The ground certainly surprised me with more character than I imagined and the bank behind the dugouts provided an elevated position from which watch the action as well as admire the view of the Warwickshire countryside. On field, after a goalless through entertaining first half, Glades took the lead soon after the restart through Justin Best and held until Steve Roche scored what looked like a late equaliser for the home side. In one final twist, Best scored his second goal and the winner in the first minute of stoppage time to give Glades maximum points.

Tuesday 14th May 2013
Just three days after winning the FA Cup at Wembley, Wigan Athletic returned to the capital but suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands on an impressive Arsenal side which condemns them to relegation to the Championship. Lukas Podolski gave the Gunners an early lead but, to the credit, Wigan levelled things up just before the interval direct from a Shaun Maolney free-kick. The Latics went close to taking the lead in the second half before three goals in eight minutes from Theo Walcott, Podolski and Aaron Ramsay gave Arsenal an unassailable 4-1 advantage. The win lifted Arsenal over Tottenham into the last Champions League qualifying spot and another three points on Sunday at Newcastle will guarantee them a 16th consecutive season in Europe’s premier club competition. I must say two things. First, what a good bunch the Wigan fans are to travel back to London is such numbers and, second, that the Emirates is a superb stadium and Arsenal should be applauded for the excellent non-confrontational stewarding which made the visit a real pleasure as an away fan.

The J. W. Hunt Cup Final finished 4-3 as it did 12 months ago and tonight, at Molineux, holders Black Country Rangers retained the trophy with the winner coming in the 90th minute from substitute Jozef Jakob. Following a quiet first half in which Paul Oakley gave Rangers a slender lead, the game came to life after the break with no fewer than six goals. Jordan Nadat doubled Rangers’ lead before Casuals roared back to edge in front with goals from Sean Williams and two from Carlo Franco. Cassies looked like prevailing on their first appearance in the final until Jakob first levelled the scores and then netted the dramatic late winner. Off the field, a healthy crowd in the Billy Wright Stand boosted the funds of the Beacon Centre for the Blind and we won the raffle!

After the excitement of the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening, tonight I bought my 2012/13 UK season to a close at another iconic stadium – Molineux. Facing each other at the home of Wolverhampton Wanderers in the final of the long-standing and much-respected J. W. Hunt Cup were two sides from the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division in Black Country Rangers and Wolverhampton Casuals.

With credit to the JW Hunt Cup website (http://www.simplesite.com/jwhuntcup): The JW Hunt Cup Charity football competition was formed in 1926 to raise funds for the sole benefit of the local blind. It is named in memory of John William Hunt, a local business man and benefactor. Mr Hunt, who died at the age of 81 in December 1925, founded the local Chillington Tool Company and was a supporter of local charities. The firm’s trademark was the ‘crocodile’ and the crocodile is incorporated into the trophy handles. It has been run every season since 1926/27 season including the War years. The inaugural winners were Short Heath United who beat Cannon Iron at Molineux in April 1927. Over £277,500 has been raised since! Season 2011/12 alone raised £6,000.

I was quite surprised to find that the last of my six previous visits to Molineux came over 22 years ago in March 1991 before the old North and South Bank terraces and Waterloo Road Stand were demolished. The Steve Bull Stand (back then called the John Ireland Stand) remains in situ with three new stands – the large new Stan Cullis Stand at the north end, Jack Harris Stand behind the south goal and main Billy Wright Stand.

Both Rangers (5th with 88 points from 40 games) and Cassies (3rd with 97 points from 42 games) had a decent league season in the West Midlands (Regional) League with top-five finishing positions. Cassies soundly won both league meetings and I saw the 5-0 victory at Brinsford Lane back in February which followed a 5-1 win at Tividale earlier in the season.

Wolverhampton Casuals (in a change kit of sky blue and white stripes) got the game underway attacking the Jack Harris Stand in the first half.

We didn’t have to wait long for a goal as Black Country Rangers took the lead in the 7th minute. Paul Oakley ran into the area down the left and slotted a right-foot shot through Todd Henderson’s legs from 8 yards out.

Casuals went close in the 21st minute. Tom Maydew got forward down the right into the Black County area and hit a low shot on target which a defender got back to clear.

Confusion at the back gifted a chance to Oakley who, in a challenge with Todd Henderson, headed just wide of the unguarded Casuals goal.

Just before the break, Mark Bellingham couldn’t quite get on the end of a deep cross from Craig Love. The Casuals captain them drove a well-struck 30-yard shot just wide of the left-hand post.

Good news at the interval as our blue ticket 206–210 was announced as the winner of the raffle!

The second half immediately came to life when Sam Wilkinson flew at a right-wing cross from Nadat and sent a diving header just wide of the far post.

Unlike the first half, chances started to be created far more frequently and Black Country doubled their lead in the 56th minute. Nadat ran down the right into the area and slotted a low shot between Henderson and the near post.

Casuals immediately bounced back with a goal a minute later. Sean Williams, on the left curled a looping shot which hit the far right-hand post and went in off defender Craig Gregg.

Henderson produced a decent save to top over a rising shot from Adam Swain before Casuals scored a 69th-minute equaliser. Angelo Franco delivered a left-wing corner to the near post which was forced over the line by Carlo Franco.

It got even better for Casuals five minutes later when they took the lead for the first time. Again from a corner, Luke Tudor sent perfect ball from the right which Carlo Franco headed into the far left-hand side of the net.

Black Country replaced Russell Garner with striker Jozef Jakob who certainly made a dramatic impact on the Final.

Jakob, who I remember playing for Stratford Town a few years ago, got Rangers back on level terms in the 82nd minute. A long throw from the left was flicked on and Jakob sidefooted home at close range.

With rain falling at its heaviest, Henderson produced another decent save with his boot to keep out a shot from Nadat but couldn’t do anything to prevent Black Country scored what proved to be the winner.

In the 90th minute, Gregg delivered a deep left-wing corner which hit the far post and rebounded kindly for Jakob to fire home.

There was still time for Casuals to mount a late attack. Sean Williams crossed deep from the right but Bellingham’s header was saved by Richard Kennerdy.

At full-time, Black Country’s Jordan Nadat was named Man of the Match.

Saturday 1st June 2013
The Bridge producing a stunning second-half comeback to turn a 4-2 half-time deficit into a 7-4 victory to lift the Summer League’s Peter Young Cup. In the sunshine at Longford Lane, three goals came during the opening nine minutes as Brassington edged ahead through Joe Redfern and Matt Allcock after James Taylor had given after The Bridge an early lead. By the time the interval arrived, Redfern again and Tom Batterley had also found the net for Brassington either side of a Craig Richardson penalty. The 130-strong crowd then witnessed five unanswered goals from The Bridge including two from both Barrie Swan and James Ingram.

Summer League’s Peter Young Cup remembers a well-respected former Secretary who sadly passed away while holding the post. The winners of the inaugural competition were Stanton Nomads and last season Bradley lifted the cup defeating The Bridge 5-0. Traditionally the final is played at the G.B. Barrington Playing Field at Kirk Langley but unavailability due to cricket meant this year’s final was switched to the David Naylor Transport Ground on Longford Lane.

Sunday 7th July 2013
My longer-than-usual summer hiatus from football briefly ended this afternoon for a very special personal reason. I’d previously seen at least one match on 352 of the 366 days of the year though, for some reason, 7th July had always proved elusive. And what a pleasure it was to add date number 353 to my tally watching this excellent pre-season fixture. In very warm conditions more suited to cricket, Port Vale scored two unanswered goals in each half to record a comfortable 4-0 victory. Gareth Tomlin, a summber signing from Southend United, bagged a brace during the second half to add to first-half strikes from Tom Pope and Louis Dodds. Newcastle Town, undoubtedly, won off the field with a decent attendance of 1446, all of whom I’m sure went home happy like me!

Saturday 3rd August 2013
Following something of a pattern from the past few seasons, I opted to watch a newly-promoted side play their first game at a higher level and so this afternoon made a first visit to Abbey Lane in over 20 years. Hanley Town, Staffordshire County Senior League champions, hosted Chadderton for their first-ever North-West Counties League game and began life at step six with a 2-2 draw. Following a goalless first half in front of a decent gathering of locals and groundhoppers, Hanley twice took the lead through Joel Stair and Danny Tainton. Twice, however, they were pegged back by equalising goals from Chadderton’s Matthew Russell and Naill Sultan. The only disappointment on an excellent afternoon being the programme sell out long before I arrived 80 minutes before kick-off.

Back in Cologne for the first time since 2011 and, after finally conquering my nemesis the Cologne Dom tower, tonight my shortlist of games consisted of either Fortuna Düsseldorf v TSV 1860 München in 2. Bundesliga or this game just seven stops from my hotel on line 18. Choosing the easy option, the Franz Kremer Stadion is located in the middle of a large wood and includes a stand down one touchline and open terracing around the other three sides. Early table toppers Köln went into this game with a 100% record of two wins but proved no match for a skilful and hungry Düsseldorf side who put the outcome beyond doubt with four unanswered first-half goals. Tuğrul Erat and Tom Golley both scored twice with Köln’s second-half consolation coming from Jannis Nikolaou.

Once I’d established a few days ago that tickets were available for this top-flight game, there was really no need to look elsewhere for a Saturday afternoon fixture. It was certainly worth the effort to once again sample the unique atmosphere of a top-flight Bundesliga game inside a modern stadium with what I consider a rather impressive roof. My ticket in block F4, booked online with print@home, put me among a group of predominantly Freiburg fans who ultimately went home despondent after their side lost 3-1 to an impressive Leverkusen side. Managed by ex-Liverpool defender Sami Hyypiä, the home side took the lead through a looping Stefan Kießling header but Mike Hanke levelled for Freiburg shortly before the interval. By the time the second half was nine minutes old, Leverkusen had scored twice through Korean Heung-Min Son and Sidney Sam. The visitors had a penalty saved and this ended their hopes of salvaging a point.

The delightful town of Ratingen, a few miles north-east of Düsseldorf, provided the setting for the third and final football leg of my German break. ‘Delightful’ because of the pleasant Marktplatz area I spent time in before heading back to Cologne and ‘delightful’ because of a warm friendly club who ticked all the boxes [apart from one]. Oberliga Niederrhein sits at the fifth tier of German football and today a hat-trick from summer signing Chamdin Said gave homesters (also known as Ratingen 04/19) a comfortable 3-0 victory over struggling VfL Rhede. At half-time, the tea bar provided a real treat of mandarin gateaux complete with cake fork and the only box not ticked during the whole day was most of the ground out of bounds to spectators apart from the large main stand.
